Privacy policy
CarPlateBook is an app for UK drivers made by ANNMAR LIMITED (company no. 16014219, 111 Bedford Way, Scunthorpe, DN15 8GF). We are the data controller. Contact: info@annmarlimited.co.uk.
The short version
- No advertising, no tracking or analytics. To add a car or check a car you sign in with Apple; we keep only the email Apple gives us (which can be a private relay address) and your report credits.
- Your cars, dates, insurance details, penalty points, notes, profile name and photo are stored only on your phone.
- To look a car up, the app sends the registration number and your account's sign-in token to our server. Never your name, cars or other details from your phone.
What is stored on your phone
Cars you add (registration, make, model, MOT history, mileage, value, photo of the model), dates you enter (MOT, tax, insurance, service, breakdown, lease), insurer and premium you type in, licence endorsements you add, your name and profile photo. You can export all of it (Profile → Export my data) and delete all of it (Profile → Delete all my data). Deleting the app also deletes it.
What reaches our server
| Data | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle registration number you look up | To fetch DVLA, MOT, mileage, specification, photo, value and (if you ask) the full history report | Results are cached by registration for 7 days (full reports 30 days) so repeat checks are fast, then deleted automatically |
| Your account (Sign in with Apple) | An Apple user ID, the email Apple shares (you can hide it with Apple's private relay) and your report-credit balance — so checks and purchases belong to a verified person and to stop misuse | Until you delete your account (Profile → Delete account) |
| Daily usage counters | A limit on car checks per account per day, to stop abuse | Deleted automatically after 25 hours |
| Your IP address | To stop abuse (a daily limit on look-ups per connection) | A counter keyed by IP, deleted automatically after 25 hours |
A registration number on its own identifies a vehicle, not you. We count how many checks an account makes each day, but we do not keep a list of which registrations you looked up.
Legal bases (UK GDPR)
Looking up a car you ask about: performance of our contract with you (Article 6(1)(b)). Your account and abuse prevention with daily counters: our legitimate interest in keeping the service available and affordable (Article 6(1)(f)).
Who processes data for us
- Cloudflare, Inc. — hosts our server and this website; short-term cache. Data may be processed in the UK, EU or US under the UK International Data Transfer Addendum / Standard Contractual Clauses.
- Check Car Details (checkcardetails.co.uk) — our UK vehicle-data provider. Receives the registration number to return DVLA, DVSA MOT, mileage, specification, image, valuation and history-check data.
- Vehicle Data Global Ltd — backup source of vehicle photos. Receives the registration number only.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases and restore. Apple handles payment; we never see your card details or Apple ID password.
Sold cars and other people's plates
If a car's plate has been moved to another vehicle, our server may use the car's history to find its current record, only to show the vehicle's MOT history. We never show you another keeper's new registration number.
Children
CarPlateBook is meant for drivers and buyers aged 17 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from children.
Your rights
You can access, export, correct and delete your data at any time in the app (Profile). Delete your account in the app (Profile → Delete account). For anything else held on our server (cached look-ups by registration) email us and we will delete it within 30 days. You can also object to processing and complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113) — but please talk to us first.
Changes
We will update this page and the date above if anything changes. Important changes will also be shown in the app.
